Between Gallura and Ogliastra, in the island’s north-east, emerges the medieval Baronie area with a rich history and invaluable archaeological heritage. This area oscillates between beautiful beaches and breath-taking mountains, luxuriant flora and characteristic fauna that populate the forests and welcome visitors, whilst an evocative religiosity that creates a magical atmosphere and occasions for celebration that the local communities continue to this day.
Baronia is comprised of ten municipalities. To the north lies Posada, which takes its name from the river flowing downstream, gushing from Monte Tepilora, with the latter being named in 2014 the “Tepilora Natural Park Oasis”, forming the “UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Protected Reserve” together with Montalbo. Posada is characterised by the Castello della Fava, a 13th-century structure that stands guard over the town.
Baronia also represents cultural inspiration. Grazia Deledda, winner of the Nobel Prize Winner in Literature, described the village of Galtellì as: “The town that seems comprised only of the ruins of the ancient Roman city,” describing its narrow streets and stone houses that pave a path between history and the typically island culture, starting from the Literary Park of Grazia Deledda through to the 18th-century Casa Marras. Not to be forgotten is the Malicas Park, with its 20th-century castle. Several Domus de Janas chamber tombs can also be found at the base of Monte Albo, bordering the town of Loculi.
Of great charm is Baronia’s folklore, a journey through local gastronomy comprised of tasty cheeses, excellent Cannonau wines, great cultural events and festivals not only for the local communities but also for all those who love learning about local traditions and customs. On this journey, the protagonists are the plethora of towns and villages that preserve simple yet unexpected jewels such as the character of “Su Maimome” in Lodè, one of Italy’s most authentic villages, or the municipal Antiquarium in Irgoli that safeguards finds from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages, recounting the surprising history of this territory.
Baronia invites you on a journey on a slow discovery of its extraordinary territory comprised of panoramic views of the mountains, waterways, quaint villages, unspoiled nature and some of Sardinia’s most splendid beaches.
