In the very center of the island, between the regions of Barbagia and Marghine, lies the Middle Tirso Valley, an agro pastoral region known for its food and wine, with a community devoted and faithful to upholding to the most ancient traditions.
Numerous village festivals create a fantastic climate of sharing and serenity and mark various periods throughout the year. Celebrations for the Madonna d’Itria are indeed very heartfelt and significant. In the town of Noragugume (among the Authentic Villages of Italy), celebrations are characterized by a fascinating equestrian race, called the Ardia, around the Church of the Beata Vergine (or Madonna d’Itria) in Gothic-Catalan style, where knights compete in a competition while holding the saint’s banner.
Outside the town walls, you may visit Tolinu nuraghe and the Menhir Sa Pedra ‘e Taleri to admire the singularity and magic created by a monument emerging out from a vast field, thought to be part of a sacred area that includes other similar monuments.
If you move further west in the region, you will reach Dualchi; the proximity between the towns of this area makes them all very similar, especially in traditions. Here as well at the end of June is the main festival of the town, in honor of St. Peter, and similar to Noragugume, the procession toward the rural church to the sanctuary which takes the saint’s name, l’Ardia di San Pietro, is not to be missed. The horse race on steep terrain around the structure catapults the participants into an almost medieval atmosphere.
The main economic activities are agriculture and sheep farming, same as the rest of the region, and the local specialty is the prickly pear; in fact an annual festival dedicated to this fruit is organized where it is possible to sample all of the delicious products made with the fruit, including the impressive traditional Dualchi liqueur, “su licore de figu morisca”.
Also in Dualchi you can observe the nuragic footprint. In fact, there are the nuraghi of Biriolaand Bardallazzu , the protonuraghe Cubas and the majestic nuraghe Ponte, eleven meters high. Continuing west, finally, we arrive at Borore, the main town of the Middle Tirso Valley in the province of Nuoro as well as the most populous, with about two thousand inhabitants, maybe more. Aside from being one of the Authentic Villages of Italy, it is also considered the land of giant’s tombs and of the oldest wine in the world because of the numerous sites of archaeological interest and prehistoric vines. The Museum of ritual bread which presents a selection of traditional breads and festivals from various countries, the Casa Delogu, among the buildings of greatest architectural value and the ruins of Sa cresia ezza are all quite interesting.
The Stele of Pedra Longa is a sight to see, almost four meters high, from the Pre-Nuragic age; only the left part and the base of the right part remain intact. At the same site, there are also eight tombs of the giants including that of Imbertighe, whose façade is defined as the most beautiful sepulcher of the giants and made iconic by its presence on the town’s emblem. The uniqueness of these finds is surprising, in fact the Duos Nuraghes complex is distinguished by the presence of two towers ten meters apart, by the presence of huts all around and by the proximity of Cannonau seeds of 1200 BC, while the Bighinzones nuraghe is considered, according to some legends, the birthplace of civilization after the “universal flood”. Stories that create a fascinating aura of mystery seasoned with ancient devotion and traditions that can only be discovered by visiting these territories.
