The Nuorese rises in the heart of the island. Traditions, masks, customs and food and wine are the backbone of the entire region, all of which are made unique through the differences of each of the ten villages that are part of it.
A region founded on livestock farming and agriculture. Thanks to the experience, techniques and traditions handed down from generation to generation, the region boasts unique regional products of the best quality that are known and exported all over the world. As in the case of Cannonau Nepente and the oil production of Oliena, which rises at the foot of Mount Corrasi in which the Lanaittu valley extends, adjacent to the national monument source of Su Gologone, which embraces the Nuragic village of Tiscali, “Sa Oche e su Bentu”, are caves that offer cinematic scenery between stalactites and stalagmites and numerous Domus de Janas and Menhirs.
A land of history and culture, with its epicenter Nuoro, the Athens of Sardinia, birthplace and inspiration of GraziaDeledda, Nobel laureate writer. You can visit her historic childhood home now used as a museum in the streets of the historic center where a visit to the MAN Museum, the Art Museum of the province of Nuoro, is also not to be missed; there are numerous works by Sardinian artists of the twentieth century. Finally, a stop at the Costume Museum is also a must, which in addition to the exhibition of traditional clothes explains Sardinia through the perspective of customs and folklore.
Art and culture are the hallmark of this territory, starting with Orani, land of established artists such as the sculptor Costantino Nivola to whom the “Nivola Museum” is dedicated, and Mario Delitalia, one of the most important twentieth century engravers in Italy, at which in turn is dedicated “the Delitalia Collection” in the evocative setting of the former Franciscan convent. Not to mention the magic created in the streets during the parade of “Su Bundhu“, one of the prime historical masks of the region, as well as “Sos Thurpos” by Orotelli, that mark one of the most important and traditional carnivals of Nuorese. In Oniferi , on the other hand, it is possible to reach the largest and oldest archaeological complex in the area, the necropolis of “sas Concas”, fascinating and mysterious in the unique symbolism of the architecture inside.
Moving north of Nuoro, you can visit one of the authentic villages of Italy, Onanì, which among quaint churches and storytelling murals, offers unforgettable glimpses between tradition and devotion, a contrast that is repeated between the villages of the interior, as with Osidda where among its beautiful buildings of local granite you can admire the miniature nativity scene with characters wearing traditional Sardinian costumes. Breathe deep breaths of the pure mountain air surrounding the village.
The local tradition still boasts a strong use of the Sardinian language, spoken in the family and in society and learned naturally as a child. From an early age one learns to sing the “Tenor“, as in the case of Bitti, where it is possible to get to know what Unesco recognizes as a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” at the “Multimedia Museum of Singing in Tenor “. Here, the Romanzesu archaeological site from the Nuragic era is a must see, inside of which is an extraordinary sacred well. The ancient worship of water unites the town of Orune with its splendid Su Tempiesu spring along this path of archaeological beauty.
An area of Nuorese, nestled in the mountains, where pastoralism marks the economic and social landscape and characterizes the surrounding customs and practices that have been handed down for centuries, a story similar to the other areas of eastern Sardinia is narrated, though differing in some details.
